Custody Arrangements in California

Under California law, both parents are allowed to maintain a relationship with their child or children after a divorce unless it is determined by the state that one of the parents is unfit.

There are two major distinctions to be made when making a custody determination in California: legal and physical custody. Legal custody means decision-making authority over such issues as medical treatment, education, religion and other issues. Physical custody determinations control where the child will live and how much time the child will spend with each parent.
